IIM-A’s Amaethon 2014 ends with a thought on Empowerment and Inclusive growth

 http://www.bilkulonline.com/gujarat-news/general-news/education-news/4640-iim-a-s-amaethon-2014-ends-with-a-thought-on-empowerment-and-inclusive-growth

Bilkul News, Ahmedabad, Jan 12: Amaethon 2014 concluded on Sunday with panel discussions and food quizzes. Following the discussion on agri-entrepreneurship and rural marketing workshop, day 2 had panel discussions on the food side of agriculture and inclusive growth in the agrarian economy.

The first food panel discussion on the theme of “Leveraging the transformation in Food Demand-Unlocking the potential” brought up the discussion on food processing industry. The discussions were very diverse with decision-makers like Siraj Hussain, Secretary, Ministry of Food processing; R. S. Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF; Atul Chaturvedi, CEO, Adani Wilmar Ltd.; C.P. Charles, Senior President; Shakti Group. The discussion threw light on cooperatives and the importance to adopt them by corporations for the benefit of both farmers and customers.

Siraj Hussain brought out the fact that if someone wants to establish a food processing industry, the setup itself is not regulated, but the procurement of raw material is regulated. There is only one way to procure, that is “Mandi” and that is not in a very good condition. He expressed his desire to collaborate with IIM-A to address the issue of losses in fruits’ and vegetables’ distribution.

Atul Chaturvedi threw light on India’s potential in agriculture by stating, “India has 52% of land which is cultivable whereas the rest of the world is just 11%. Adding to that, major parts of the world can produce only 1 crop per year, but India can produce in more crop seasons and produce a variety of crops.”  He stated about the opportunity, “Consumer profile is changing and changing towards packaged food. It is the biggest opportunity for marketers out there.”

R.S.Sodhi, by bringing up the milk revolution and dairy products as the reference point talked about the opportunities and solutions for the food sector. “In the last couple of years, the bullishness of the market we are observing is so huge that it is becoming very difficult for an individual manufacturer to address this issue. We need to strengthen supply chain to meet this demand.” He clarified that in a free economy, everyone has the right and scope to participate in the market. Charles made the final remarks, “The productivity of our dairy animals is very low. Institutional structure is very much needed at the village level.”

Manish Agarwal, Vice President, Gati  Kausar Cold Chain Solution Ltd., spoke about the growing importance of third party logistics and integrated supply chain solutions. Agarwal stated that the present agricultural cold storage in India is highly fragmented and the capacity is sufficient only for 50% of the present day requirement. The second part of the discussion involved a case study by Prof. Chetan Soman, IIM Ahmedabad, on “Inventory Build-up” system with specific reference to the dairy sector. In his presentation, Prof. Chetan Soman emphasized that the philosophy of Supply Chain Management has remained the same, but the means and methods keep changing.

The evening session on “Rural Development, Empowerment and Inclusive Growth” was moderated by Prof. Vijaya Sherry Chand, IIM Ahmedabad and the panel was constituted by Dr. Y.K. Alagh, Former Union Minister and Chancellor of Central University of Gujarat; Dr. Mirai Chatterjee, Director – Social Security, SEWA and Member – National Advisory Council, PMO; Dr. C. Suvarna, Special Commissioner, Dept. of Rural Development, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh; and Anoop Kaul, National Head – Financial Inclusion, BASIX. Dr. Y.K. Alagh said that policy interventions should be based on economic patterns. Citing examples from his own experience and study, Dr. Alagh said that nearly 1800 villages had turned into Census Towns and had requirements of a town in terms of markets, infrastructure etc.

Dr. Mirai Chatterjee showcased how organizing had helped give voice and representation to women. Through examples, Dr. Chatterjee said that women organizations promote income generation and lead to requirement of credit and savings, linkages with markets etc., especially for rural and tribal populations. Anoop Kaul of BASIX said that the organization was looking at inclusion in different perspectives – social, financial, governmental, educational, energy etc. The concept of Common Service Centres Network would be evolved as Agro Service Enterprises as a one-stop shop for services in rural areas.

All in all, Amaethon 2014 was was the biggest agri-business summit seen in recent years. IIM-Ahmedabad's Post Graduate Programme in Agribusiness Management (PGP-ABM) is ranked No. 1 Globally in MBA (Agribusiness) / Food Industry Management Global Ranking for the Second Year Running by Eduniversal, Paris (2012)
